In response to the devastating earthquake and ensuing tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011, S.W.A.T. has partnered with a wide group of Southlake citizens and groups to help organize a relief initiative for Southlake’s Sister City, Tome, Japan.

Tome City, located in northeast Japan, is approximately 70 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter. Tome (previously Toyoma) and Southlake entered into a Friendship City relationship in 1991. This was modified to a Sister City agreement in 2004 when Toyama merged with other towns to become Tome City. Read more about Tome, Japan on its city site.

Because of Tome’s elevation, it was spared from the tsunami but suffered unprecedented loss of power, infrastructure, and damage as a result of the earthquake. Hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged and many destroyed. Learn more.

Some key Southlake sponsors for the Tome City relief initiative are:

Mayor Terrell: representing City of Southlake and leading person of this community effort.

Southlake Sister Cities: a key participant, assuming the role of communicating with Tome and providing a venue & conduit for holding donations & disbursing funds to Tome.

S.W.A.T.: another key participant, taking a leading role in publicity and community outreach.

Southlake4Japan: a website sponsored by S.W.A.T., acting as a hub that collects and distributes information from different participants for events they sponsored.

S.W.A.T. (Southlake Working As A Team) is a grassroots movement of Southlake churches, businesses, organizations and individuals who work as a team to make Southlake a better place. It’s our desire to build awareness, relationships, and support for Southlake’s Sister City during this crisis.

On Saturday, August 28, nearly 120 volunteers descended on Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve. Volunteers from the City Council & Staff, Mayor John Terrell and family, a Boy Scout troop, Tarrant County Master Gardeners, Cross Timbers Equestrians, Steele Stump Removal, Cliff’s Tree Trimming, Gateway Church, Grace Community Church, Southlake Baptist Church, and many residents from Southlake turned out to help spruce up the Nature Center.

(Pictured above: Southlake Baptist Pastor, Clayton Reed & Southlake City Councilwoman, Dr. Carolyn Morris)

For about 3 hours, the Nature Center was a hive of activity as volunteers weeded flower beds, put down new mulch, trimmed trees, ground stumps, repaired bird feeders, and cleared brush and leaves from nature trails. The Nature Center provided crafts and activities for small children. Chick-fil-A of Southlake graciously donated lunch to all volunteers.

(Pictured above, left to right: Southlake Baptist Care Pastor, Zack Polyak, Southlake City Councilman, Brandon Bledsoe, Southlake Mayor, John Terrell and a volunteer from Bob Jones Nature Center)

S.W.A.T. (Southlake Working As A Team) is a community initiative founded by Southlake Baptist Church in an effort to bring together Southlake churches, businesses, organizations and residents to make Southlake a better place.

When asked about why S.W.A.T was formed, Southlake Baptist Pastor, Clay Reed had this to say:

“Our goal at Southlake Baptist Church was to create an organization like Southlake S.W.A.T. that capitalizes on the enormous resources of different constituencies in Southlake that typically don’t work together and create a sense of community and team work for the betterment of the City.”

One of our goals for Southlake Baptist Church is to “seek the peace” of our City. To that end, our church has formed a community initiative called S.W.A.T. (Southlake Working As A Team). S.W.A.T. is a grassroots movement of Southlake churches, businesses, organizations and residents who are partnering together to make Southlake a better place.

On Saturday, August 28th, from 9AM until NOON, S.W.A.T. will host a community workday at Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve in the north part of Southlake. The Nature Center and Preserve is a City of Southlake park and non-profit organization that does much for the children in our town and surrounding communities.

Volunteers from the City Council & Staff, Boy/Girl/Cub Scouts, Tarrant County Master Gardeners, Cross Timbers Equestrians, Gateway Church, Grace Community Church, Southlake Baptist Church, and others will join with S.W.A.T. as we tidy up the landscaping around the Nature Center and Preserve during a time of budgetary cutbacks.
There are opportunities for everyone to get involved. We need volunteers to:

Weed flowerbeds

Put down new mulch

Pick up trash

Clean nature trails

Oversee special projects

Pick up tree trimmings

There will also be special jobs and crafts provided by the Nature Center for small children.

The Nature Center and Preserve will have plenty of bottled water and snacks for everyone, and Chick-fil-A at Southlake is graciously providing lunch for all volunteers at the event.

You will need to bring some of the following:

Work gloves

Trowels

Clippers and loppers

Wheel barrows

Gardening hoes, shovels, rakes, etc.

Please make sure to mark all of your equipment.

We need as many volunteers from Southlake Baptist to be at the event as possible. I will announce more about the 28th on Sunday and send out an evite to all of our church members and regular attendees. If you have any questions or need additional volunteer information, please contact me directly at 682.556.3624 or at zack@southlakeswat.org.

Blessings,

Zack Polyak
